All Natural
Artist Statement

The latest series of paintings is titled "All Natural." I originally had in mind a much harsher title since the work is concerned with the sense of dread or impending doom that seems to pervade our society at the moment. The possibility that something dire is in our future, either as a nation or as a planet, forms the subtext of these abstractions. But they are evocations and not explicit representations of this mood.

The title I finally decided on refers to the fact that nature (or the guiding force underlying it) is ultimately in control; we mortals are not. What I'm noticing as the series progresses is that I'm tending to veer away from the original gloom & doom notion, which may indicate a positive outcome will ultimately prevail.

My working process merges precise geometric elements with looser paint application; very much like the earlier series. Acrylic paint is used exclusively because it's quick-drying and I'm interested in the effects that can be achieved with it. Color choice is an important and basically intuitive aspect of these new paintings. After starting out on a rectangle, I'm confronting the square and the challenge of enlivening a static shape.
