| Family Scrapbook Redux
Artist Statement Begun before graduation from art school, FAMILY SCRAPBOOK was my very first series, consisting of 10 collages on canvas. This series was inspired by and derived from photo albums and other ephemera that had been accumulated by my maternal grandparents. Most of the works were destroyed during a heavy rainstorm in San Francisco--they were being stored in an underground garage that unfortunately became flooded. Two of the collages had been sold prior to this event and presumably have been saved; however their whereabouts is unknown. With a wealth of additional material and a bit more sophistication brought to bear, the current series is essentially a revisiting of this older series. In the mid 1990s, after the passing of my father, I inherited an amazing number of family photo albums and scrapbooks that I'm just now beginning to examine. Although some of the people pictured in the countless photographs remain unfamiliar to me, each one is apparently part of my history. Many of the pictures are extraordinary historical images. Supplementary items that relate to my individual background are also being incorporated into these compositions. To my knowledge, no other artist has explored this particularized territory. |
